How has it been three weeks already? )

**

Approximately 28 days until I leave for the States! In the words of kids today: I am excite! I've been spending these past three weeks getting all my ducks lined up in a row: getting my study plan figured out and approved, getting accommodation sorted, and getting all the loose ends from Sciences Po tied up.

Speaking of which, I passed all my courses! \o/ My transcript was released online about a week ago, and my time in Paris was certainly not wasted. :) I was concerned about my marks for Contemporary Domestic Politics of the US, as I was really sick the last two days before it was due (marathon puking ftw! /o\), and ended up having a nervous break-down in the last hour before it was due (as in full-on panic attack, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, couldn’t function, uncontrollable tears type of nervous break-down), but according to the mark breakdown I actually did OK on it. Thank Christ.

My visa application interview was at 1.45pm last Tuesday in Sydney. It was approved! So happy. :) Now I just need to wait a week for my passport to come back, and then I can purchase my flights! ...which may be more of a drama than I thought, because apparently the shortest travel time between Brisbane and Chicago takes 30 hours, which...no. A thousand times NO. I am not spending 30 hours in planes and airports when the flight should only take 17 hours. Going to have to do some shopping around to find the best deal...gods damn it.

OK. OK. OK. So. I went and saw the Dark Knight Trilogy marathon last night at Garden City’s Event Cinemas. It started at 6pm: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and then at midnight The Dark Knight Rises. We (I dragged my mum along) saw the first two films in the normal cinema, then moved to Gold Class for The Dark Knight Rises...totally worth it. Reclining arm chairs, delectable munchies brought to your seat...so good.

Non-spoilery reaction...oh my ever-loving god. I was pretty damn impressed. The cast was amazing (major kudos to Tom Hardy...the amount he can do with just his eyes is pretty amazing). I liked the story...in a balance of +s and –s, the +s came out on top, and most of the –s I could handwave away without too much trouble. There...is possibly a tiny continuity issue, but I’d need to see it again to be sure.

I’m going to post a more in-depth recap/discussion in a bit...there’s so much to squee over! This recap will have ALL the spoilers, so only read it if you’ve seen the movie or don’t care about being spoiled all to hell. And once you’ve seen the film, please comment here or there or on Twitter or Facebook or through GChat or AIM or something and SQUEE WITH ME BECAUSE AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH BATMAN.

ba da ba da ba da ba da ba da BAH BAH! tag brought to you by my two-year-old self, who used to drop everything whenever the old school live-action Batman show came on the TV so I could bob along to the theme song and yell "ba da ba da ba da ba da ba da BAH BAH!" at the top of my lungs before watching them BIFF! and POW! and ZAPP! their way through another episode.

Inception

So I ended up seeing Inception three times...two Tuesdays ago, last Friday, and last Saturday. Each time I loved it a little more, and each time I noticed something new or made a new connection. Holy crap, how is this film so awesome?

This post is pretty much me just figuring everything out, because three viewings in and I'm still unclear on some points. Lots of discussion, lots of speculation, some blatant fan-girling of Eames (♥), rampant abuse of italics and capslock...also, spoilers, so if you haven't seen Inception, for gods' sakes go and see it and then come back and discuss how awesome it is!

Cut for spoilery discussion and speculation...3500+ words of it. :D? )

Short version? Inception is a pretty awesome movie. Like all movies, it has its flaws and its triumphs, but I think it came out on top, although some aspects frankly worried me. But I can't wait 'til the DVD comes out...yay special features! \o/

p.s. Have now seen Mysterious Skin and can actually see it working as Arthur's backstory. Am also now really, really creeped out.

p.p.s. Just did a spell-check of my post in preparation for the actual posting bit...I'm amused that the spell-checker highlighted my "nyah nyah bitchcakes".
nomoreuturns: Star Trek Delta Insignia (Star Trek XI)
It appears that I fail at recapping IRL occurrences in a timely manner. *facepalm* Okay, here we go.

On Sunday I met up with [personal profile] naeara, [personal profile] faith_girl222, and [profile] pipsi_pirate at the ScotiaBank Theatre downtown to see Star Trek (again)! I got to the theatre around 3.25, got my ticket, then stood around at the meeting place for a few minutes until I realised that the other two girls were possibly two of the girls I was there to meet. Once we'd all arrived we grabbed our munchies as required, then headed in to see the film.

It was just as good on the big screen as I remembered! I cried again at George Sr's death, and caught a few things I hadn't seen the first time (or on the subsequent viewings on my laptop). I realised that the cooing sound when we meet Scotty is the tribble!* And other stuff and nonsense. It was good to see a movie again with people, especially people who are as invested in the film as you.

Afterwards, we went and took a picture with the Star Trek display, then went down to the Starbucks beside the theatre and talked about Star Trek, fic, the ridiculousness of Twilight, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Fun times! And then [personal profile] faith_girl222 went to do Father's Day stuff and [profile] pipsi_pirate and [personal profile] naeara and I went to HMV to look for the Star Trek OST and then to Chapters to mock William Shatner's Star Trek novels. We also performed our good deed for the year by flipping every bit of Twilight paraphernalia that we saw, thus saving the minds of innocents from the craziness of SMeyer's creation.

And then we all disbanded and went to our various places of residence. And then I got back to my place and downloaded the Star Trek/I'm On A Boat vid and ripped it to my iPod, because I need vids on my iPod to amuse me while I'm at work.

All in all, it was a great day! It was fantastic to meet some people in Vancouver, particularly these GQMFs, as they are made of awesome and win! I'm already contemplating the logistics of organising a watching party for when the DVD comes out...I want some people to squee over the Gag Reel of Epicness and Win and Captain Fine Knocking Over The Captain's Chair with!

* I saw the tribble the second time, but I thought the cooing was an engine or something...and yes, I know, it's weird for me to focus on a background noise, but I can't help it, my brain just picks up on the weird little things.

The lovely [personal profile] candidlily provided me with a Dreamwidth code, and I finally got around to setting it all up! I'll probably use this thing to post from now on, and auto-crosspost to my LJ. I'm not going to disable comments over at LJ...if I ever do, it'll be when everyone on my f-list has made the switch.

In other news, it was Blog Like It's The End Of The World Day yesterday! I didn't know this existed until after the fact last year, and was bummed that I'd missed it...then I realised it was an annual thing! So I signed up for it this year. I signed up with my LJ, but most of the BLITEOTW shenanigans happened over on Twitter...anything with the #bliteotw tag was part of the fun, though I think my first tweet of the day could also be counted, as it mentions the screaming baby next door (getting eaten, mayhaps? ...I'm sick, I apologise) and my roomie being really loud (which could potentially attract zombies). I hope the me residing in the BLITEOTW-world survives...it'd be sad if I didn't. My last Twitter update was very simply "fuck.", so who knows which way it went.*

I had a busy-ish day yesterday...for me and for a Saturday, at any rate. Woke up at 8am thanks to the aforementioned loudness of the roomie and the baby screaming next door; went to the store and bought laundry detergent and a box so I can clean up my room; put on a load of washing; headed into the CBD to open a savings account and got a brand new card with a shiny chip so it's harder to defraud me; went and saw Up! and cried like a baby (more on that later); came home and switched out laundry and tried not to kill roomie. And carrying on with the BLITEOTW happenings, of course.

So, Up!. I was sorta not really kinda maybe going to see it today...almost didn't when I realised I had an hour and a half until the next session, but did it anyway. It made me cry within the first ten minutes - narrowly losing out to Star Trek, which came in at seven minutes (George Kiiiiiirrrrrk ;____;) - and at least two other times during the course of the film. It hit both my fear-of-never-doing-anything-with-my-life-and-never-living-out-my-dreams button and my father-issues button. Overall I liked it, but I don't think I'll ever willingly see it again.

Okay, so you know how sometimes you start reading a series, and it starts out really promisingly? And then about five fics in the characters start to get OOC, and talk way, way too much and way, way too articulately about their feelings and each other's psyches and all that jazz? And it seems to be degenerating the further into the series you go, but you persevere anyway, because now you just want to see what happens, damn it? And you're hoping it'll get better...and then suddenly it's fic 30 and it's OTT and OOC and you just want to shoot yourself with phasers set to OH MY GOD BRAIN I'M SORRY I TORTURED YOU WITH THIS HERE'S A MERCY-KILLING YOU SORRY BASTARD???
...that's me right now. :(

* ...I think I'd just realised I was feeling really fucking tired, and I wasn't sure if I was going to push on or stop for the night. I like to think I stopped, checked my LJ, saw that the friend I was going to hole up with had told me that the 205 was a massacre-in-progress, and eventually arrived safely at her place (with a small, quick, painless sidetrip for some more shells for the shotgun and all the other guns I had).
